Color Inspiration from the Masters of Painting

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

As I’ve said before, I absolutely love the ColourLovers blog.

Their latest post is the best yet.
Basically they have hand picked some of the greatest pieces of art and then compiled the colour palette used by the artist.
Here’s an example:

The Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci

The Mona Lisa     Mona Lisa
Painted between 1503 and 1506 in Florence, Italy. It is painted using the sfumato method, a term coined by Leonardo referring to a painting technique in which translucent layers of paint are applied so subtly that there is no perceptible transition. Her enigmatic smile has been both evocative and cause of speculation as to whom she might be.

This is a post you can’t afford to sleep on.

Swindle Magazine

Friday, July 18th, 2008

Looking for a nice coffee table mag?

Set up by Shepard Fairey (Obey) and Roger Gastman (While you were sleeping magazine) in 2004, SWINDLE magazine is a definite must have for any coffee table.
The magazine offers an insight into everything imaginable, from interviews with Henry Rollins and Banksy, full page fashion  spreads, underground music scenes to articles on big rigs!
No matter what the article is about you can guaranty that it will be aesthetically pleasing, that’s one thing the magazine strives for.  I think that’s why I find it such an inspirational magazine to read.

They are up to Issue 17 now.
A sneak peak at the latest issue:
For #17, we looked around for examples of creative energy, and brought back quite an eclectic display. From the streets of Baltimore to the bustling capital of Nigeria, the stories in this issue showcase vast forms of expression. We visit Los Angeles’ Mariachi Plaza, where dozens of mariachis congregate every day—socializing, playing music and making their living. In “Nollywood Dreaming,” we go inside Nigeria’s booming film industry, and “Big Rig! Part Two” takes a look at the vibrant subculture of custom trucks through the lens of photographer Roger Snider. We also bring you East L.A.’s obsession with all things Betty Boop; Gary Baseman’s menagerie of mask photos; and three artist features: Chaz, Roy Ferdinand and Amanda Visell. We think that this diverse selection of stories has something for everybody, and we hope that you gain as much inspiration from it as we have.

Go take a look at their site and order some back issues!

OBAMA HOPE

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

As I’m sure most of you are aware, Shepard Fairey has been a massive influence on the street art scene and in my eyes is one of the real pioneers. I can remember being fascinated by his “André the Giant Has a Posse” sticker campaign and then being blown away by his explanation of this as being an experiment in PHENOMENOLOGY (check spelling)!

Any how, a lot of Shepards work has sparked controversy and made us think. His latest campaign is a series of posters supporting Barack Obama’s campaign for Presidency in 2008. He designed 3 posters in total; “PROGRESS”, “HOPE”, and “CHANGE”, all have had a massive impact on Baracks campaign. Obama has even personally thanked Shepard for all his work!

Fifty Designers Favourite Typfaces

An awesome project setup by Create/Reject, the creative home of James West, to raise money for the victims of the cyclone that hit Myanmar (Burmar). All proceeds are heading straight to Unicef to help fund their huge support and relief effort helping out the victims of the cyclone. All sold out online now, which is great news for Unicef but sadly not so good if you wanted a copy,… but you can still by the book from Koenig Books in Charing Cross Road and Artwords Bookshop in Shoreditch, so get down there quick!
